Pressing and holding a chat in the list opens a preview of it. You can read what is there, let go, and the chat is still unread — no marks change, and the sender is told nothing.
It is the answer to a specific problem: knowing what a message says before deciding whether you are ready to answer it.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Read a chat without marking it read.
- check_circle Put a chat back to unread after opening it properly.
- check_circle Know the routes that do and do not send a receipt.
- check_circle Decide whether to be in this game at all.
Holding shows the conversation; releasing without opening leaves everything as it was.
visibility Looking without arriving
Opening a chat is an event: it clears the unread count and, if you both have read receipts on, tells the other person you have seen their message. Sometimes you want the information without the event — to know whether something is urgent before you are in a position to deal with it.
The preview gives you exactly that. Hold, read, release. Nothing is marked, nothing is sent, and the chat stays in your list looking exactly as unanswered as it is.
The companion is the opposite operation: marking a chat unread after you have read it, which puts the badge back so you do not forget. Between them you can separate reading from dealing with, which is most of what a full chat list needs.
Four ways to read something quietly
Three work. The fourth is the one worth thinking about.

rule The larger decision
Peek when you need a fact. If you are peeking constantly, turn the receipts off and stop performing.
settings Reading quietly
- Press and hold the chat in the list The preview appears.
- Read, then release Without sliding up into the chat.
- Use the notification for short messages It marks nothing at all.
- Mark a chat unread after opening it To keep it on your list.
- Consider turning read receipts off If you do this every day.
- Remember the trade Yours off means theirs invisible too.
This page is reading without committing. The curriculum step is the routine around it: marking things unread deliberately, working a chat list to empty, and separating the act of reading from the act of dealing with something.
