Setting an animated profile picture is easier on a computer than on a phone. The source video is already there, the trimming controls are precise, and you can see the result at a sensible size before committing to it.

If you are going to have a moving avatar at all, this is where to make it.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Set an animated avatar from a desktop client.
  • check_circle Trim it and pick the frame precisely.
  • check_circle Prepare a source clip that will actually work.
  • check_circle Keep your previous pictures rather than losing them.

Dragging a video in, trimming it and choosing the still frame all happen on one screen.

desktop_windows A mouse is better than a thumb here

The awkward part of an animated avatar is choosing exactly which second loops and exactly which frame represents it when it is still. On a phone that is a thumb on a tiny scrubber; on a desktop it is a pointer, and the difference in precision is the difference between a good avatar and a nearly good one.

You are also likely to have the better source there. A clip from a camera or an editor lives on a computer, and dragging it straight into the profile screen skips moving it to a phone first.

Whatever you replace, the old picture is not destroyed. Previous profile photographs are kept in a gallery on your profile, so you can restore one or delete it deliberately — worth knowing before you experiment.

Prepare the clip before you start Square, a few seconds, one subject filling the frame, slow movement, and a clear moment to use as the still. Fixing those in a video editor takes two minutes and removes every compromise you would otherwise make in the avatar screen.

Four steps that decide the result

Two happen before Telegram is involved at all.

videocam What to start from

check_circle Shot square or cropped square already, with the subject large. The avatar is a small circle and everything outside the centre is lost.
check_circle Good light and a still camera. Motion in the frame is fine; motion of the frame is nauseating at this size.
cancel A clip with rapid cuts or flashing does not belong beside every message you send.

Prepare the clip properly, then make it on a desktop. The still frame is the decision that matters.

settings Doing it

  1. Crop and trim the clip in an editor first Square, a couple of seconds, one subject.
  2. Open your profile in the desktop app And choose to set a photo.
  3. Drag the video in Rather than hunting through a file dialog.
  4. Trim so the loop does not jump Using the precise controls.
  5. Scrub to a still frame that stands alone This is the important step.
  6. Check it in the chat list At the size everybody else sees.
