Custom emoji are not only for messages. The same small images can sit beside your name as a status, inside a group's title, in a channel's description, and as reactions — five different places, each with its own effect.
The status is the one worth knowing about, because it is the only part of your profile you can change in a second and it says something without a sentence.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Set an emoji status beside your name.
- check_circle Use custom emoji in the places beyond messages.
- check_circle Add and remove the packs they come from.
- check_circle Keep them readable for people who are not in on it.
Packs are installed like sticker sets, and the same emoji is then available everywhere it is supported.
emoji_emotions Five places, not one
In a message they sit inline with the words, which is what distinguishes them from stickers. As a reaction they become a community's own way of responding. In a group or channel name they mark it in the chat list at a glance. In a description they organise a block of text.
And as an emoji status they appear next to your name wherever it is shown. That is the interesting one: a status you can change in two taps, visible to everybody you talk to, with no sentence attached. Away, busy, celebrating, ill, on holiday — whatever the symbol means in your circle.
All of it comes from packs, installed and removed like sticker sets, and shared as links. A group with its own pack is giving its members a vocabulary rather than a decoration.
Four uses, in order of usefulness
The first is the one nobody thinks of and the last is the one everybody overdoes.
person Beside your name
forum In a title or a description
group A shared vocabulary
rule The failure mode
The status is the best of them. In text, one is an accent and six are a wall.
settings Using them

This page is where custom emoji can appear. The curriculum step is making a set: design constraints, tagging so people can find them, and building a pack that becomes part of how a community talks rather than a novelty it installs once.
