How to Use Interactive Custom Emoji: Synchronized Full-Screen Effects, Haptic Bursts & 1-on-1 Chat Animations
A custom emoji is built on an ordinary one. Somebody who cannot display your version — an old client, a different app reading a forwarded copy, a place that only handles plain text — sees that ordinary emoji instead.
Which means the question worth asking before you use them is not what they look like to you. It is what your message reads like when the pictures do not arrive.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Predict what other people see in place of a custom emoji.
- check_circle Write messages that survive the fallback.
- check_circle Use the full-screen effects where they land well.
- check_circle Turn the movement off on your own side.
Tapping one plays it large, the same way the standard interactive emoji behave.
swap_horiz Every custom emoji has a plain twin
When a pack is made, each image is associated with a standard emoji. That association is what lets it be searched for, and it is also the fallback: wherever your version cannot be shown, the standard one appears in its place.
So a sentence using a custom emoji as a word breaks in exactly the way you would expect. If the message still makes sense with a generic smiling face where your team's logo was, it is fine. If it does not, you have written something only some of your readers can understand.
The same applies to forwarding and to copying text out. A quote of your message elsewhere carries the plain twin, not the picture — which is another reason to keep the meaning in the words.
Four audiences for the same message
Write for the last one and the first three take care of themselves.
group People who share the reference

content_copy Copied, quoted, exported
animation With animation turned off
Write the sentence so it survives the plain emoji underneath. Then the decoration is a bonus rather than the message.
settings Using them safely
- Check what the plain twin is It is the emoji the custom one is based on.
- Read your message as if only the twin appeared If it still works, send it.
- Keep them out of announcements and rules Those get quoted and exported.
- Tap an interactive one to play it large In a chat where that is welcome.
- Assume a mixed group has people who cannot reply in kind And use words as the base.
- Turn animation off on your own side If it is too much.
This page is about a feature rendering differently in different places. The curriculum step is why that happens: the official clients on each platform, what varies between them, and what you give up on an unofficial one.
