How to Restrict Voice and Video Messages in Telegram: Audio Privacy Gates, UI Button Dimming & Exception Lists

play_circle Video tip • Privacy

You can stop people sending you voice messages and round video messages. It is a privacy setting like any other: everybody, contacts only, or nobody.

It sounds trivial and it is not. Voice is the one message format that demands your ears, your attention and a quiet room, and being able to decline it is a genuine relief for some people.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Restrict who may send you voice and video messages.
  • check_circle Know what the sender sees when they try.
  • check_circle Handle the ones you do receive more easily.
  • check_circle Decide between restricting and simply asking.

It sits with the other privacy controls and takes the same three values as the rest of them.

mic_off A format you can decline

Text can be read in a meeting, on a train, at two in the morning and with the sound off. Voice cannot. It arrives at the sender's convenience and is consumed entirely at the recipient's cost — which is exactly why some people send long ones and why some people dread receiving them.

Setting this to contacts only is the arrangement most people want. Friends and family can still speak to you; a stranger or a new contact has to write, which they were going to have to do anyway to be understood.

Somebody who tries is told the recipient does not accept voice messages. It is a clear refusal rather than a silent failure, so nobody is left wondering whether it arrived.

Transcription is the other answer If the problem is that voice messages are hard to consume rather than that you dislike them, converting them to text solves it without refusing anybody. The two features address the same complaint from opposite ends.

Four responses to the same problem

Restricting is the strongest and not always the best.

forum With people you know

check_circle One sentence asking somebody to write rather than speak usually works, and it is less strange than the setting refusing them.
check_circle Most people send voice because it is quick for them, not because they insist on it.
cancel It does not scale to strangers, which is where the setting earns its place.

Restrict for strangers, transcribe for friends, and keep your own short.

settings Setting it

  1. Open privacy and security The voice message control is with the other privacy settings.
  2. Choose contacts only Unless you have a reason for nobody.
  3. Add exceptions if you need them The same as any other privacy setting.
  4. Tell close contacts if you choose nobody So a refusal is not a mystery.
  5. Use speed and transcription for the ones you do get They are the gentler fix.
  6. Say the point first in your own Whatever you set.

This page refuses one format. The curriculum step is the wider subject of who may reach you at all: restrictions on direct messages, what happens when an account is limited, and the appeals process when the limit is not one you chose.
