A gift is a fixed length — some number of months — rather than a recurring payment. It starts when they accept it, runs out at the end, and nothing renews automatically. Nobody is signed up to anything and no card details change hands on their side.
That makes it a reasonable present for somebody who would use the file size or the transcription and would not think to pay for it. It also makes it a reasonable way to find out whether you want it yourself, if somebody offers.
