An emoji status is a small symbol beside your name, set in two taps and visible to everybody who sees you. It is the lightest thing you can change about your profile and the only one that can be made to expire by itself.

Used as a convention inside a team it carries real information. Used decoratively it carries none, and both look identical from outside.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Set a status and give it an expiry.
  • check_circle Agree a small set of meanings with a group.
  • check_circle Know who can see it and where it appears.
  • check_circle Recognise when it is not doing any work.

Choosing one takes two taps, and holding offers a duration after which it clears itself.

person A signal only if somebody agreed what it means

The symbol has no inherent meaning. A palm tree beside your name says holiday only if the people reading it have decided that is what it says, which in practice means a team that agreed on three or four and uses them consistently.

Where that agreement exists it is genuinely efficient: a glance at the member list tells you who is around, who is heads-down and who is away, without anybody writing a message about it. Where it does not, it is jewellery.

The expiry is what keeps it honest. A status saying you are away, still there three weeks later, is worse than no status at all — it teaches people to stop looking.

visibility
It is the same for everybody Unlike most of the profile, a status cannot be shown to one group and hidden from another. Whatever you set is visible to every person who can see your name, including people from another part of your life entirely.

When it carries information, and when it is decoration

Both columns are legitimate. The mistake is expecting the right-hand one to behave like the left.

work It carries information when

check_circle A small group agreed what the symbols mean. Three or four of them — available, focused, away, on call — turn a member list into a board you can read at a glance.
check_circle The meanings are pinned in the group. Without that, nobody remembers which is which after a fortnight and the scheme quietly dies.
check_circle It expires by itself. Holding a status offers a duration — an hour for a meeting, a day for being out, a week for a holiday.
check_circle That expiry is the whole basis of trusting it: a status that is showing is one somebody set recently, rather than one they forgot in March.

emoji_emotions It is decoration when

cancel It is simply a symbol you like. Perfectly fine and much the commonest use — but nobody is reading it as a message, so do not expect it to be interpreted as one.
cancel It never changes. A permanent status becomes part of your name and stops being seen; one left running past its situation teaches people to ignore everybody's.
cancel It is meant for one group. Everybody sees the same symbol, so it cannot say something addressed to your team and not to your family.
cancel Somebody has to act on it. It stops no notifications, mutes nothing and says nothing about when you will be back. For that, write the message.

A status works when a small group agreed what it means and it expires by itself. Otherwise it is decoration.

forum
What it replaces is a message nobody enjoys sending The announcement that you are unavailable is awkward to write, awkward to repeat, and stale within the hour. A symbol with an agreed meaning and a timer does the same job continuously and asks nothing of anybody — which is the only argument for the feature that survives contact with a real team.

settings Setting one

This page is a status you choose. The curriculum step is the presence you do not: online indicators, last seen, typing, and the settings that decide how much of your availability other people can observe.
