How to Manage Telegram Detailed Storage Usage: Per-Chat Cache Breakdown, Granular Media Clearing & Disk Optimization

play_circle Video tip • Storage

The storage screen does not only show a total. It breaks the cache down by chat and by type, so you can see that one group is responsible for most of it and clear that group alone.

Which turns storage management from a blunt clear-everything into a decision you can actually make.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle See which chats and which media types are using the space.
  • check_circle Clear selectively rather than all at once.
  • check_circle Set limits so it never needs doing again.
  • check_circle Tell the cache apart from things you have saved.

The breakdown by chat is the useful half; the total on its own tells you nothing actionable.

storage Cached is not kept

Nothing on this screen is your data. It is a local copy of things that live in the cloud, held so that opening a photograph is instant rather than a download. Clearing it removes the copy and not the content: everything reappears the moment you open the chat again.

That makes the screen safe to use aggressively. The only thing that cannot be re-fetched is something you saved out deliberately, and saved files are not in the cache at all.

The breakdown is what makes it worth opening. One channel that posts video, or one group with a year of photographs, is usually most of the total — and clearing that one thing solves the problem without touching the chats you actually use.

Set a limit and stop doing this A maximum cache size and a retention period mean old media is dropped automatically. The screen then becomes something you visit once a year rather than every time the phone complains.

Four ways to reclaim space

In order of how surgical they are.

forum The one responsible

check_circle The list is sorted by size. The chat at the top is usually most of the problem and clearing it alone is usually enough.
check_circle Nothing is lost. The chat keeps every message and every file; only the local copies go.
check_circle If the same channel is at the top every time, turn off automatic downloading for it instead.

Clear the one chat at the top, then set a limit and never open this screen again.

settings Using the screen

  1. Open data and storage, then storage usage The breakdown is there.
  2. Look at the list by chat Sorted with the largest first.
  3. Clear the chat at the top Nothing in it is lost.
  4. Clear video rather than everything It is where the space is.
  5. Set a maximum size and a retention period So this becomes automatic.
  6. Check auto-save if the phone is still full That space is not the cache.

This page is the breakdown and what to clear. The curriculum step is the model behind it: what a cloud messenger keeps on a device and why, the automatic cleanup rules, and how cache size interacts with the download settings.
