How to Use Telegram Temporary QR Codes: Ephemeral Contact Sharing, Number-Masking & Zero-Username Privacy
Handing somebody your QR code gives them a way to reach you without giving them your phone number. Where that code is made from an invite link rather than from your permanent handle, it can also be withdrawn later.
Which turns meeting somebody into a reversible decision, rather than one that lasts as long as your phone contract.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Share a way to reach you that does not include your number.
- check_circle Tell a permanent code from a withdrawable one.
- check_circle Stop somebody contacting you after the event.
- check_circle Choose the right approach for a conference, a shop or a stranger.
Showing a code is faster than spelling a username and gives away nothing you did not choose.
qr_code_scanner What the code contains is the decision
Your profile QR contains your public username. It is permanent, it identifies you, and anybody who photographs it has that address forever — which is fine for people you want to keep.
An invite link to a group, or a link you can revoke, is the other kind. It gets somebody in to the specific thing you wanted, and you can withdraw it afterwards without affecting anybody who already used it.
Neither reveals your phone number, and that is the point worth remembering. Swapping numbers was the old way to be reachable; a code is the version that does not hand over the identifier your bank uses.
Four encounters, four kinds of code
They differ in one respect that matters more than the rest: whether you can take it back afterwards.
| Show this code | Why that one | Taking it back | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Somebody you want to keep in touch with | Your profile code | Permanent, instant, and no telephone number changes hands. Save the image into your photographs so you can show it without navigating the app in front of somebody. | Only by changing your handle, which breaks every old code and old link at once. Check once who can see your number and who can find you by it. |
| A room full of people | A code for a group invite link | Everybody lands in the right place, nobody collects your personal handle, and the link can carry an expiry and a member cap so it dies when the event does. | Revoke the link in the group's link list and every code made from it stops working immediately — including the printed ones. |
| A seller, a driver, a stranger | Theirs, not yours | Scanning costs you nothing at all: you get a chat, they get nothing. Telegram's own scanner lives in the search area, which keeps it out of a browser. | Block or delete the chat afterwards; neither requires an explanation. Nothing was given away, so there is nothing to withdraw. |
| A poster, a slide, a shop window | A code for a revocable invite link | A printed code outlives the occasion by years, so the one thing it must not be is your permanent address. A slide showing a username is a slide showing exactly that. | Revoking works, but people are still holding the paper. Anything printed should point at something you are willing to keep or to replace. |
A code shares a handle or a link, never a number. Use the kind you can withdraw when the meeting is temporary.
settings Sharing yourself safely
- Set a username So you have something to share that is not a number.
- Restrict who can see your number and find you by it Two separate settings.
- Save your profile code as an image To show without navigating.
- Use a group invite link for an event With an expiry, and show its code instead.
- Scan theirs rather than showing yours With strangers.
- Revoke the link or change the handle When you want it back.
This page is showing a code across a table. The curriculum step is what sits behind the withdrawable kind: links with time limits and member caps, per-link join counts, and revoking one without disturbing anybody already inside.
