Telegram can be told to keep almost nothing on the device. Set the cache to its smallest and messages, photographs and files still all work — they are fetched when you open them and dropped again afterwards.

That is possible because the account lives in the cloud rather than on the phone, and it has consequences well beyond saving space.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Run Telegram with a very small footprint.
  • check_circle Move to a new phone without transferring anything.
  • check_circle Say what is not in the cloud.
  • check_circle Judge the trade against working offline.

The storage screen going to almost nothing, with every chat still intact behind it.

cloud_done The device holds a view, not the data

Your messages are on Telegram's servers. What the app keeps locally is a working copy for speed — recent conversations, media you have opened, thumbnails. Delete all of it and nothing is lost, which is a different relationship with a phone than most applications have.

The practical consequence is the one people notice at the worst moment: a lost or broken phone costs you nothing. Sign in on the new one and everything is there, in order, with the media intact. There is no backup to have remembered to make.

It also means a cheap phone with little storage runs Telegram perfectly. Set a small cache limit and a short retention and the app takes a few hundred megabytes rather than several gigabytes.

Secret chats are the exception, deliberately They exist only on the two devices that created them. That is what makes them end-to-end encrypted, and it also means losing the phone loses the conversation. If a secret chat matters, that is the trade you accepted when you started it.

Four consequences of the cloud model

Three are advantages and one is the cost.

smartphone Nothing to transfer

check_circle Install, sign in, done. No backup file, no restore, no waiting, and nothing missing.
check_circle Which is also why two-step verification matters so much: the account is the data, and the password is what protects it.
cancel Secret chats and anything you saved to the gallery do not come across. Deal with those before the phone goes.

The phone is a window, not a filing cabinet. Which is why the password matters more than the device does.

settings Running lean

  1. Open data and storage Both settings below are there.
  2. Set a small maximum cache size And a short retention period.
  3. Turn off automatic downloads on mobile data They are what fills it.
  4. Open in advance what you will need offline Opening is what caches it.
  5. Turn on two-step verification The account is the data.
  6. Deal with secret chats before changing phone They do not travel.

This page is what the model means for your device. The curriculum step is what it means for you: the account as personal storage, how files are held and streamed back, and organising something that will grow for years.
