How to Set a Public Profile Photo in Telegram: Dual-Identity Persona Architecture, Contact Privacy Shields & Anti-Doxxing Controls
Your profile can show two different pictures: one to your contacts, and a separate public one to everybody else. Restricting your photo no longer has to mean showing a grey circle to the world.
It is the neatest privacy setting in Telegram, because it removes the usual trade between being recognisable and being exposed.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Show one picture to contacts and another to everybody else.
- check_circle Choose a public image that identifies without exposing.
- check_circle Set the underlying privacy rule correctly.
- check_circle Know where the public one appears.
The public picture is set from the same privacy screen that restricts who sees the real one.
public Two pictures, one profile
The privacy setting decides who may see your profile photo — everybody, contacts, or nobody. Restricting it used to mean strangers saw a blank, which is unhelpful when a blank profile is also what a fake account looks like.
Setting a public photo fills that gap. Contacts see your real one; everybody else sees whatever you chose to be seen by people you have not met — a landscape, a logo, a drawing, a photograph where you are not identifiable.
The public picture is what appears to anybody who merely has your number, finds you by username, or sees you in a group you both belong to. That last one is the case most people forget, and it is by far the most common.
Four choices for the public one
Each says something different about you to people you have not met.
person_off A blank profile
image Recognisable, not identifiable
work A deliberate public face
settings Two settings, not one
Restrict the real one, then put something distinctive in the gap. A blank avatar is its own signal.
settings Setting it up
- Open privacy and security, then profile photo Both parts are there.
- Restrict who may see it to contacts That is the setting that does the work.
- Set a public photo for everybody else On the same screen.
- Choose something distinctive rather than blank Especially if you post in public groups.
- Add exceptions if a few specific people should see the real one Or should not.
- Check it from another account if you can To see what strangers actually get.
This page sets the second picture. The curriculum step is the idea behind it: partitioning an identity, what each audience can see, and building a public presence that does not expose the private one.
