Playback speed is not limited to the three preset buttons. Holding the control opens a slider, so you can sit at one and a quarter, or one and three-quarters, rather than jumping between round numbers.
That sounds like a detail and it is the difference between a speed you can listen to for an hour and one you give up on after five minutes.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Set a speed precisely rather than from presets.
- check_circle Choose a speed to suit the material.
- check_circle Keep it set between messages.
- check_circle Slow something down when speeding up is not the problem.
Holding the speed control opens a continuous slider rather than cycling through presets.
speed The right speed is a narrow band
Every speaker has a rate at which they are comfortably faster and still clear. For most it is somewhere between one and a quarter and one and three-quarters, and the exact point depends on how quickly they talk naturally, how good the recording is, and how familiar the subject is.
Presets miss that band as often as they hit it. Double speed on somebody who already speaks quickly is unintelligible; one and a half on a slow, careful speaker is still slower than reading. The slider is how you find the point that works.
Pitch is corrected, so a faster recording does not sound comical — but corrected pitch cannot rescue a bad recording. On poor audio, slower is often clearer than faster.
Four kinds of recording
Each has a different comfortable speed, and one of them is slower than normal.
mic Somebody talking informally
campaign A prepared session
slow_motion_video Below normal
hearing When you cannot make it out
Find the band by ear in the first minute. And remember the slider goes below one as well.
settings Using it
- Start playing and hold the speed control The slider appears.
- Adjust by ear in the first minute Rather than choosing a number in advance.
- Leave it set It carries to the next message.
- Go below one for a fast speaker Or for watching something closely.
- Use headphones for poor audio Before touching the speed.
- Transcribe anything long Speed is the smaller saving.
This page is listening to a recording. The curriculum step is where most long recordings come from: running a voice chat or a stream, recording it, and producing something worth listening back to at any speed.
