How to Set Chat-Specific Wallpapers in Telegram: Custom 1-on-1 Backgrounds, Peer Sharing & Blurred Color Canvases

play_circle Video tip • Appearance

Any single chat can have its own wallpaper. Set from inside that conversation, stored with your account, and unaffected by whatever the rest of the app looks like.

Used once it is decoration. Used as a system across four or five chats it becomes something more useful: a way of knowing which conversation you are in before you have read a word.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Give one conversation its own background.
  • check_circle Build a colour scheme that means something.
  • check_circle Avoid the mistake that costs you a message.
  • check_circle Keep it working on your other devices.

AUTOPLAY

Set from inside the chat rather than from the appearance settings, which is why most people never find it.

wallpaper Colour as a label

The most expensive mistake in a messenger is typing into the wrong conversation. Names look alike, the list reorders itself, and the difference between a work chat and a family one is a line of text you did not read.

A distinct background removes that entirely, because you register a colour before you register anything else. Give the two or three chats you must not confuse a wallpaper each and the problem disappears.

Keep the scheme small and consistent. Four coded chats is a system; fifteen decorated ones is noise, and the recognition value comes from the contrast with everything that looks normal.

devices
It follows the chat, not the device A per-chat wallpaper is stored with your account, so it is there on your phone and your desktop alike. Your app-wide theme is per device; this is not.

Which chats are worth marking

Chosen by risk rather than by affection — and the right-hand column is most of your chat list.

palette Mark these

check_circle Where a mistake is expensive. A work group, a client, a chat with somebody senior. Use one colour for all of them rather than one each — the signal you want is "work", not "which work".
check_circle Chats that look alike. Two people with the same first name, or a group and its offshoot. Renaming the contact fixes the chat list; the background fixes it once you are already inside and typing.
check_circle A group with hundreds of people in it. Worth marking purely as a reminder of the audience, and the same argument covers any public chat where strangers can read what you write.
check_circle Set a generated gradient rather than a photograph: it weighs nothing, adapts to light and dark, and stays readable behind the bubbles. Check both themes before settling.

block Leave these alone

cancel Everything else. The scheme works because it is rare — three or four marked chats in a list of two hundred are unmistakable, and thirty marked chats are wallpaper.
cancel Chats you simply like. Decorating the ones you enjoy is a perfectly good reason to use the feature, but it is a different feature from the one described here and it dilutes this one.
cancel Anything you will change next month. A warning only works if it has been the same for long enough to be recognised without reading it.
cancel Busy photographs, anywhere. The point is recognition, and a dark photograph makes every message harder to read in exchange for nothing at all.

Mark the chats where the wrong message is expensive. Three or four, one scheme, kept for years.

settings Setting one

  1. Open the chat and its menu The wallpaper option is inside the chat, not in settings.
  2. Choose a gradient rather than a photograph It reads better behind text.
  3. Use one colour for a category Work, family, public.
  4. Check it in light and dark Before keeping it.
  5. Mark only three or four chats The contrast is the signal.
  6. Rename ambiguous contacts too The list and the chat are two different moments.

This page uses a background as a label. The curriculum step is the wallpaper system itself: your own images, blur and darkening, the parallax effect, and how per-chat backgrounds sit on top of a global theme.
