An upgraded gift can be worn. It becomes the symbol beside your name, and its colours take over the top of your profile, so the item stops sitting in a list and starts being part of how you appear.
It is the most visible thing you can do with a collectible, which is exactly why it is worth thinking about for a moment first.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Wear a collectible and take it off again.
- check_circle Put a time limit on it.
- check_circle Know what other people actually see.
- check_circle Judge when it is the wrong signal to send.
Wearing it changes two things at once — the symbol by the name and the colour behind the profile.
workspace_premium What wearing one says
A worn collectible is doing something no other status does. An ordinary emoji status says what you are up to. This one says that you own a specific numbered item from a limited run, and everybody who understands the system knows roughly what such things cost.
Among people who collect them that is the whole point, and it reads as intended: a nice piece, worn with some pride, the way anybody wears anything. Outside that circle it reads differently — as a display of money, or as nothing at all, depending on whether the viewer has any idea what they are looking at.
Neither reading is wrong and neither is a reason not to do it. It is only worth knowing which rooms you are in, because the symbol appears beside your name in all of them at once and the profile behind it changes colour to match.
Can I wear any gift?
Only an upgraded one. A standard gift sits in your profile list and stays there; wearing is one of the things the upgrade unlocks, along with being able to transfer or sell it. If the option is missing, that is why.
What exactly changes when I wear it?
Two things. The item becomes the symbol beside your name, wherever your name appears — chat lists, member lists, group conversations. And the top of your profile takes on the colours that came with the item, so anybody opening your profile sees the collectible's palette rather than the default one.
Can I set it to come off by itself?
Yes, and it is usually the better choice. Wearing has the same duration options as any other status, so you can put one on for an hour or a day. Something that clears itself keeps meaning something; a status that has been there since spring has become part of your name and stopped being noticed.
Do I need the paid subscription for this?
Wearing a collectible you own is tied to owning it rather than to a subscription, which is one of the few places the two come apart. Getting the collectible in the first place is where the money went, so it is not free in any meaningful sense — but there is no second charge for displaying it.
What happens if I give the gift away?
The status goes with it. Wearing is a claim about ownership, so the moment the item belongs to somebody else it stops appearing beside your name — without asking you, because there is nothing left to ask about. Anybody who saw your profile before will notice the colours have changed back.
How many can I wear?
One at a time, which is worth taking as a hint. The status is a single small symbol and its whole effect comes from being one thing; a collection is displayed in the gifts section of your profile, where people who care can look through it properly.
palette The backdrop is the part people underestimate
The symbol beside the name is small and easy to ignore. The colour change is not: it covers the top of your profile, and it was chosen by whoever designed the collectible rather than by you. A palette that looks striking in a preview can be an odd thing to meet at the top of a page carrying your name and your description.
So it is worth opening your own profile after putting one on, in both the light and the dark theme, and looking at it the way somebody arriving for the first time would. If the bio is harder to read than it was, the collectible has cost you something you did not mean to spend.
