Telegram has a one-tap day and night switch that most people never find, and three different dark themes that behave differently on different screens.

The switch is a shortcut worth knowing. The choice between the three is the part that decides whether reading in bed is comfortable or merely dark.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Flip between light and dark in one gesture, without opening settings.
  • check_circle Choose between the dark themes for the screen you actually have.
  • check_circle Know when true black is a saving and when it is a cost.
  • check_circle Stop doing it manually once you have decided.

The sun and moon icon sits in the side menu on Android; on iOS the same switch is behind a long press on the Settings tab.

dark_mode Three dark themes, not one

Night is true black. Every pixel of background is off on a screen that lights its own pixels, which saves power and gives the highest possible contrast.

Dark blue and the tinted variants are dark grey with a colour cast. Less contrast, less power saving on an emissive screen, and easier to read for a long stretch.

Which is better depends on your screen and on how long you read. On a traditional backlit display the power argument does not apply at all — the backlight is on regardless — so the only question is comfort, and comfort usually points away from pure black.

contrast
Maximum contrast is not maximum readability White text on pure black produces a halo effect around letters that makes long passages tiring, and on some screens scrolling over pure black leaves a faint smear. If the dark theme feels harsh, that is what you are noticing.

Which dark theme, and when

Four circumstances. The right answer changes with the screen, the room and how long you are going to be looking at it.

battery_alert The power argument

check_circle On a screen where each pixel makes its own light, a black background means those pixels draw nothing. The saving is real and largest on a mostly-dark interface.
cancel On an ordinary backlit screen there is no saving at all. The backlight is on whatever colour you display.
check_circle If you do not know which you have, look at the phone in a dark room on a black screen. A backlit panel glows faintly grey; an emissive one looks off.

Most people end up with: a dark grey theme, automatic by schedule, and the manual switch for exceptions.

settings The switch and the settings

  1. Android Open the side menu. The sun or moon in the corner flips the theme immediately.
  2. iOS Press and hold the Settings tab at the bottom. A small theme switcher appears.
  3. Choose the dark theme itself Settings, Appearance or Chat Settings. Night, dark blue or a tinted variant — this is a separate choice from when it switches.
  4. Set the trigger Auto-night mode, on the same screen. System, schedule or sunset.
  5. Check the accent colour in both A colour chosen on a light background can be barely visible on a dark one.

This page is choosing the theme and the switch that flips it. The curriculum step covers the triggers in depth — system, schedule and ambient light — and what each one gets wrong, which is the other half of the same decision.

Summary

At a glance
