Telegram Profile Videos Architecture: Keyframe Scrubbing, Dual-Stream Static Avatars & App-Wide Premium Loop Rendering

play_circle Video tip • Profile

Your profile picture can be a short video instead of a photograph. It plays when somebody opens your profile, and you choose which single frame of it is used everywhere a still image is needed.

That second part is the whole craft. The frame you pick is what most people will actually see, because a chat list shows a still.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Set a short video as your profile picture from an existing clip or the camera.
  • check_circle Choose the still frame deliberately rather than accepting the first one.
  • check_circle Shoot something that works inside a circle and a few seconds.
  • check_circle Keep your old picture instead of replacing it.

The scrubber under the preview is the frame chooser, and it is the control that decides what most people see.

videocam One upload, two results

Setting a profile video produces two things: the clip itself, and a still taken from the moment you selected. The clip plays when somebody opens your profile. The still is what appears in chat lists, in group member lists, beside your messages and anywhere small.

So the still is not a fallback. It is the main picture for practical purposes, and choosing it badly — mid-blink, mid-word, mid-turn — means that is your photograph until you change it.

The clip is short by design, a few seconds at most, cropped square and looped. Colour adjustments are available in the same editor if the light needs helping.

Where it animates depends on the viewer Everyone sees the video when they open your profile. A Premium subscriber also sees profile videos animate in more places around the app. Either way, the still is doing most of the work.

Making one that works

Four constraints the format imposes. Working with them takes a minute; ignoring them is why most profile videos look accidental.

image Choosing the frame

check_circle Scrub slowly and pick a moment that would work as a photograph on its own. Eyes open, face still, expression settled.
cancel The default is usually the first frame, which is almost always you reaching towards the phone.
check_circle Judge it small. Zoom out or look at the preview at the size it will appear in a chat list, not full screen.

If you do one thing: choose the still frame on purpose. It is the picture, and the video is the bonus.

settings Setting one

  1. Open your profile and edit it Settings, then the camera or edit control on your picture.
  2. Choose a video From your gallery, or record one there and then.
  3. Crop it square Put the subject in the middle; the corners will not be seen.
  4. Scrub to the frame you want as the still This is the step to spend time on.
  5. Adjust the colour if it needs it The same enhance and slider controls as the media editor.
  6. Save It becomes your current picture; the previous ones remain on your profile.

This page is making one. The curriculum step covers the profile picture as a system: the history behind the current one, who can see which, and keeping a public face separate from a private one.
