What do I do if my username is taken?
It depends which kind of username it is. Telegram has basic usernames, handed out first come first served, and collectible usernames, which are owned assets recorded on the TON blockchain.
If it is a basic username
Telegram can help you acquire it for your account or channel if you can show that the name is genuinely yours, such as a trademark or an established presence under that name elsewhere. This exists because a username is part of an online identity, and somebody sitting on a brand's name should not be able to hold it indefinitely.
- Confirm the username is not registered as a collectible. If it is, this route does not apply.
- Gather evidence of your claim: the trademark, the website, the established account on another platform.
- Submit the request with that evidence and the exact username.
If it is a collectible username
It is somebody's property, so the route is to buy it. Collectible usernames are traded on Fragment, where ownership transfers on-chain rather than by informal agreement. There is no appeal process for an asset somebody legitimately owns.
If neither applies
- Add a short qualifier rather than a long one. A brand plus a single word reads as deliberate; a brand plus a year reads as a fallback.
- Avoid underscores in the middle. They are invisible when spoken and are the favourite tool of impersonators.
- Publish whichever username you take on your own website, so people can verify which account is yours.
