What is a Passkey?
A passkey lets you sign in to Telegram the same way you unlock your device, with a PIN or with biometrics such as a fingerprint or face recognition. It is an additional login method that works instead of an SMS code.
Setting one up
- Be signed in to Telegram on the device already.
- Create the passkey from the login and security settings.
- Confirm with the device's own unlock method.
From then on, signing in on that device is a PIN or a fingerprint rather than waiting for a text.
Why it is better than an SMS code
- It works when the number does not. Travelling, roaming disabled, no coverage, a SIM left at home: none of it matters.
- It cannot be intercepted. There is no message to redirect, read from a lock screen, or obtain through a SIM swap.
- It is instant. No waiting and no retry loop.
- It is bound to the device. The secret never travels, so there is nothing in transit to steal.
How it fits with your other protections
A passkey replaces the SMS step, so it removes the weakest link in a typical login. Two-step verification remains worth having alongside it: the two protect against different things, and having both means neither an intercepted code nor a lost device is sufficient on its own.
