How to Use Spoiler Formatting in Telegram: Shimmer Dust Masking, Tap-to-Reveal & Anti-Leak Privacy Guide
Select some text, choose spoiler, and it arrives blurred. The reader taps it to reveal it. The same works on a photo or a video before you send it.
It is the only formatting in Telegram that changes who sees what rather than how it looks, and it has more uses than the film plot it is named after.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Hide part of a message, or a whole image, behind a tap.
- check_circle Apply it from the keyboard as well as the menu.
- check_circle Use it for things that are not spoilers at all.
- check_circle Know what it does not protect.
The hidden text animates rather than sitting as a grey block, which is how a reader knows it is tappable.
visibility_off Consent, built into a message
Every other formatting option decides how something looks. This one decides when it is read. The reader chooses to see it, which is a small courtesy that turns out to be useful well beyond film endings.
It works on part of a message, so a sentence can carry its own warning and its own content: the context in plain text, the thing itself hidden. That is far better than a separate message with the answer, which arrives on the notification screen anyway.
Media can be sent spoilered too. A photograph that is fine to look at once you are ready but not fine to have appear while scrolling — a result, a surprise, something graphic — is exactly the case.

A spoiler asks are you ready. It never asks are you allowed.
settings Applying one
- Select the part to hide A phrase, not usually the whole message.
- Choose spoiler from the formatting menu It sits with bold and italic.
- Or type it Double bars around the text, where that is quicker.
- For media, use the option before sending Attach the photo, then mark it as a spoiler.
- Leave enough in the clear So the reader knows what they are choosing to see.
- Remember anybody can tap it And do not use it for anything that matters.
This page is one formatting option. The curriculum step is the whole set: bold and italic, code blocks and quotes, links written over text, and the typed syntax for each of them.
