How Telegram Stars Work: In-App Currency, Digital Purchases, Bot Monetization & Gram Rewards
Stars are Telegram's own currency. You buy them with real money, and they are what pays for digital things inside the app: content in a channel, something in a mini app, a gift.
The reason a currency exists at all is worth knowing, because it explains most of what feels odd about it.

Digital goods sold inside a phone app have to be sold through the app store on that phone, and the store takes a share. Every large app solves this the same way: an internal token bought through the store, then spent inside the app without the store being involved again.
That is what Stars are. Not a cryptocurrency, not an investment, not something with a market price — a prepaid balance for buying digital things from creators and developers inside Telegram.
Two practical consequences follow. First, the price of a thing in Stars does not translate neatly into your own currency, which is deliberate and makes spending feel smaller than it is. Second, the money left the moment you bought the balance, so the decision that matters is the purchase of Stars rather than the purchase you make with them.
Which suggests one habit worth more than any other: buy the amount you are about to spend, not a convenient round number. An unspent balance is money you have already parted with, sitting where it can only be used in one place.
