A voice message does not have to be sent as recorded. Lock the microphone, stop instead of sending, and the recording appears as a waveform with a handle at each end — drag them inwards, listen back, then send.
The handles are only at the ends, which sounds like a limitation and is actually a description of what goes wrong with voice messages.

Listen to any voice message and the same shape appears. A second or two of rustling and breathing before the first word, because you started recording and then started thinking. Then the content. Then a tail where you have finished but have not yet found the button, sometimes with a half-word of something you decided against.
Those two ends are almost always the only bad part, which is why handles at the ends turn out to be the right tool rather than a restricted one. Pulling them in removes the part that makes a message sound unprepared without touching the part that says something.
The opening matters more than it looks. The recipient decides whether to play a voice message from the length of the bar and, once playing, from the first second. Two seconds of nothing at the start is two seconds in which they conclude this can wait.
You recorded a voice message and stumbled over the first sentence. What can you do?
As long as the recording is still in the composer rather than in the chat, the waveform is there and the start can be moved forward. Once it has been sent there is no editing a voice message — the only remaining option is deleting it and sending another, which everybody in the chat sees. The window for all of this is before the send button, and it is the reason to stop rather than send by reflex.
Where do the trim handles sit?
This is the one thing worth knowing before you rely on it. A cough in the middle, a sentence you want back, a number you got wrong halfway through — none of those can be trimmed out, and the honest response to any of them is to record it again. Trimming tidies the edges of a good take; it does not rescue a bad one.
There is traffic noise through the whole recording. Does trimming help?
Trimming is a pair of scissors, not a filter. Noise running under your voice is still there in whatever remains, and the only fixes are physical: move somewhere quieter, get closer to the microphone, or type the message instead. Worth knowing because people trim a noisy recording, hear the shorter version, and send something the other person still cannot make out.
What is the single most useful habit this enables?
The trimming is the small gain; the preview is the large one. Almost nobody has heard how their own voice messages sound, which is why so many of them wander. Listening once tells you whether the point arrived in the first sentence, whether you actually said the time and the place, and whether ninety seconds could have been thirty. Most of the time you will re-record, and that is the improvement.

The reason any of this is worth thirty seconds is that a voice message is the one format the recipient cannot skim. They cannot glance at it, cannot search it later, and cannot find the part that concerns them without playing the whole thing. Whatever length you send is a length they have to spend.
Trimming is the cheapest way to respect that, and the preview is what tells you whether the trim was enough. If the playback makes you impatient with yourself, it will do the same to them — and in that case the right answer is usually two sentences of text rather than a shorter recording.
