Pinning is not only for groups. In a one-to-one chat you can pin a message to the top of the conversation, and you can choose whether the other person sees it pinned or whether it is a bookmark only you have.
That checkbox is the whole feature. Everybody knows the group version; almost nobody uses the private one, which is a shame because the private one is more useful.
What you will be able to do

Hold the message, choose pin, and read the checkbox before confirming. That is the only decision in it.
push_pin Yours, or both of yours
Pin a message and Telegram asks whether to pin it for the other person too. Leave that unticked and nothing happens on their side at all — no notification, no bar at the top of their chat, no way for them to know. The pin is a private bookmark inside a shared conversation.
Tick it and you both get the bar. That is right for something you are coordinating: a meeting place, a flight number, the decision you reached after forty messages of arguing about it.
A chat can hold several pins. The bar at the top shows one at a time and tapping it moves to the next, or to a list of all of them, which makes it a small index of the things that matter in a long conversation.
Four things worth pinning, and four that are not
Three of the good ones are private. The distinction that decides it is whether the other person needs the thing too.

- Keep it short Three pins is an index; fifteen is another chat to scroll through.
This page is the private version in a one-to-one chat. The curriculum step is the public one at scale: several pins in a group or channel, ordering them so they read as a structure, and using the pin bar as a table of contents for a community.
