How to Delete Messages by Date in Telegram: Calendar Timeline Selector, Date Range Purges & 2-Way Chat Clearance
Between deleting one message and deleting a whole conversation there is a third option most people never find. Tap the floating date label in a chat, choose a day or a range, and only that period goes.
It is the tool for the common case: a chat you want to keep, containing a week you would rather did not exist.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Delete a specific day or range from a chat.
- check_circle Do it for both people rather than only for yourself.
- check_circle Choose the right tool among four that all delete something.
- check_circle Stop needing to do it, by setting a timer instead.
The date label that floats as you scroll is a button, and the calendar behind it is the selector.
date_range Four sizes of deletion
Telegram gives you the same action at four scales: one message, a selection, a date range, and the whole chat. They differ only in how much they take, and each offers the same choice about whether the other person keeps their copy.
The date range is the least known and often the most appropriate. An argument, a period of work you are done with, a week of photographs you no longer want on anybody's phone — all of those are bounded by time rather than by content, and selecting them by hand would take an hour.
As with every deletion here, there is no undo and no older copy waiting on another device. A cloud account means one copy, everywhere, and removing it removes it everywhere at once.
Four ways to remove things, in order of size
Most people know the first and the last, and reach for the wrong one as a result.
| What goes | When it is the right size | The catch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| One message | That message, on both sides if you tick the box | A single mistake. There is no time limit, and in a private chat you can remove their messages as well as your own. | For a typo, edit instead — deleting leaves a hole in the conversation that editing does not. And one message pulled out of a long exchange rarely fixes the exchange. |
| A date range | Everything between two dates, on both sides if you choose | When the thing you want gone has a shape in time rather than a shape in content. Tap the floating date label and pick a start and an end. | Scroll the range before confirming it and move anything worth keeping into Saved Messages first. Nothing comes back afterwards. |
| The whole chat | Clear history empties it; delete chat removes it altogether | When the conversation itself is finished. In a private chat either can be applied to both sides. | This is what people reach for when they wanted the range, and it takes years of things they would have kept. Export first if there is any chance at all. |
| A timer instead | Everything, continuously, after a period you set | The right answer for a conversation that should not accumulate at all — reaching for the date range is usually a symptom of not having set this. | It works forwards only. Switching it on today does nothing about last year, which is exactly the gap the range exists to close. |
Match the tool to the shape of the problem: a message, a period, or a policy.
group None of this works the same way in a group
Everything above describes a private chat, where the two of you have symmetrical powers and either can remove a message from both sides. A group is not symmetrical. You can take back what you wrote; you cannot take back what anybody else wrote unless you are an administrator with that permission, and the date-range tool is a property of a one-to-one conversation rather than something you can apply to a shared room.
What you can always do in a group is remove your own side of it. What you cannot do is make a conversation stop existing for four hundred other people, and that is by design rather than an omission: a record that any participant could quietly erase would not be a record at all.
The honest limit applies everywhere, including private chats. Deletion removes the copies Telegram holds. It does not reach a screenshot, a file somebody saved, an export made last month, or the notification that already appeared on a lock screen. For anything you actively need not to exist, the moment that mattered was before sending it — which is the strongest argument on this page for setting the timer rather than relying on cleaning up afterwards.
settings Deleting a period
- Scroll to the period in the chat The date label floats at the top as you go.
- Read what is in it And forward anything worth keeping to Saved Messages.
- Tap the date label It opens the calendar selector.
- Choose the day, or a start and an end The selection is shown before you confirm.
- Decide whether it goes for both of you The same checkbox as any deletion.
- Set an auto-delete timer afterwards So the chat does not accumulate the same problem again.
This page deletes a period from one chat. The curriculum step is the largest scale of the same idea: the timer that removes an entire account after a period of inactivity, what it takes with it, and why setting it deliberately is worth a minute.
