How to Set Custom Mute Durations in Telegram: Flexible Time Sliders, Silent Notifications & Sound Toggle Controls
Muting a chat is not only on or off. Hold it in the chat list and you are offered an hour, eight hours, two days, forever — or a time you choose yourself.
The choice matters because a permanent mute is a decision and a temporary one is a nap. Most of what people want is the nap, and most of what people set is the decision.

The value of a timed mute is that it undoes itself. You can silence a group during a meeting, a flight, a dinner or an evening and it comes back without you having to remember — which is the part that fails with a permanent mute, because nobody ever goes back to unmute anything.
The custom option takes an exact date and time, which suits the real cases: quiet until Monday morning, quiet until the event is over, quiet until you are off the train.
None of this is visible to anybody else. Muting is a property of your copy of the chat; the other person cannot tell, and their messages arrive normally. It is the least confrontational setting in the app and it is worth using far more freely than most people do.
