How to Use Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Video in Telegram: Multi-Tasking Playback, Floating Windows & Canvas Resizing

play_circle Video tip • Playback

A video playing full screen does not have to stop when you leave it. Minimise it and it shrinks into a small window you can move around, keep watching, and drag out of the way — while you read the chat, look something up, or leave Telegram entirely.

It is the difference between watching something and being held hostage by it.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Keep a video playing while doing something else.
  • check_circle Move, resize and dismiss the floating window.
  • check_circle Listen to something with the screen off.
  • check_circle Use the same idea for calls and round messages.

AUTOPLAY

Minimising shrinks the player into a corner rather than stopping it.

picture_in_picture The video follows you

The floating window can be dragged to any corner, pushed partly off the edge to get it out of the way, resized, and closed with a flick. Tapping it restores the full player at the same position, so nothing is lost by minimising.

Where the platform allows it, the window survives leaving Telegram altogether — the video keeps playing over another app while you answer an email or check a map. That is a system feature rather than a Telegram one, so whether it happens depends on your device and its settings.

For anything you are listening to rather than watching, there is a better option still: the audio continues with the screen off and the app closed, exactly as a podcast would. A recorded talk does not need to be looked at.

speed
Combine it with the speed control A long recording at one and a half times, floating in a corner while you work through the chat it came from, is the arrangement that makes recorded sessions actually get watched.

Four things that keep playing

Video is only the first of them.

videocam Watching and doing

check_circle Minimise, drag it to a corner, carry on. Tapping it goes back to full screen with the position kept.
check_circle Push it partly off the edge when it is in the way rather than closing it. It stays there and stays playing.
check_circle Whether it survives leaving the app depends on the platform and on your device's own permissions.

If you are watching, float it. If you are listening, lock the screen and save the battery.

settings Using it

  1. Open a video full screen Then minimise it rather than closing it.
  2. Drag the window where you want it Corners, or partly off the edge.
  3. Tap it to go back to full screen The position is kept.
  4. Flick it away to close it Which stops playback.
  5. For anything you are only listening to, lock the screen The audio continues.
  6. Turn your camera off before minimising a call It keeps sending otherwise.

This page keeps one thing playing while you do another. The curriculum step is the wider version of that: split screen, multi-column layouts, what changes on a folding device, and using Telegram alongside other applications rather than instead of them.
