How to Use Telegram Stories Front Flash: Color Warmth Adjustment, Low-Light Intensity & Dual-Tone Studio Lighting

play_circle Video tip • Camera

Most phones have no flash on the front, so when you turn the camera round in a dark room the screen itself becomes the light. Telegram lets you set how bright it is and how warm.

Which turns a feature that normally makes people look terrible into one that occasionally does not.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Light a selfie story with the screen.
  • check_circle Match the warmth to the room you are in.
  • check_circle Avoid the flat, washed-out result.
  • check_circle Know when to leave it off entirely.

AUTOPLAY

Holding the flash control in selfie mode reveals the warmth and brightness sliders.

light_mode The light is in front of you

A screen used as a lamp sits about an arm's length away, directly in front of the face, and that is a genuinely flattering position — it is roughly where a photographer would put a soft light. The problems come from the two things you can now control.

Brightness is the first. At full intensity you get a flat, bleached face with no shadow anywhere, which reads as a snapshot taken in a lift. Shadow is what makes a face look like a face; leave enough of it that one side is slightly darker than the other.

Warmth is the second, and it matters more than people expect. A cool white light in a room lit by lamps makes you look grey against an orange background. Matching the room is what stops the picture looking like a cut-out.

nightlight
It lights you, not the room The screen reaches your face and nothing else. A dark background stays dark, which is fine for a portrait and useless if the point of the story was where you were.

Four situations

In two of them the best setting is off.

dark_mode Where it earns its place

check_circle Somewhere genuinely dim — a restaurant, a car, a room lit by one lamp — where the alternative is a grainy mess.
check_circle Start low and raise it until your face is lit, not until the slider runs out. Two thirds is usually past enough.
check_circle Hold the phone slightly above eye level. The same light from below is the one that makes people look alarming.

Match the warmth of the room, keep some shadow, and move towards a real light if there is one.

settings Setting it up

  1. Switch to the front camera in the story composer The flash control appears there.
  2. Hold the flash control To reveal warmth and brightness.
  3. Set the warmth to match the room Warm indoors, cool in daylight.
  4. Raise brightness until your face is lit And then stop.
  5. Hold the phone a little above eye level Light from below is unkind.
  6. Turn it off where there is atmosphere Or where a bright screen would be rude.

Part of the beginner curriculum Step 18 — Colour grading, exposure and contrast

This page lights the picture as it is taken. The curriculum step is what can be done afterwards: recovering an underexposed shot, adjusting contrast without wrecking skin tones, and how much of a bad exposure is actually recoverable.
