A one-time voice or video message arrives looking almost like any other, with a small mark saying it will not survive being played. You tap, it plays, and then the bubble says it is gone.
Everything that normally happens to a message afterwards — replaying, forwarding, quoting, finding it again in six months — does not happen to this one.

Most of what makes chat useful is that it accumulates. You can look up what was agreed, forward the explanation to somebody else, search for the sentence you half remember. A one-time message opts out of all of it deliberately.
That is the information in it. Somebody who sends you one has decided this should be heard rather than kept, and is accepting that they cannot refer back to it either. It is closer to something said in a room than to a message.
Which is why the right response is to treat it as a moment rather than a notification. Open it when you can listen properly — not on a platform, not mid-conversation — because there is no second attempt and no transcript to fall back on.
