A boosted group can be given a look of its own: an accent colour, a decorated header, and eventually a background that appears for every member who opens the chat.
The last one is different in kind from the others, because it changes what several thousand people look at all day.

wallpaper A shared room, not your room
Setting a background for a private chat affects you, or you and one other person who was asked. Setting one for a group affects everybody in it, and none of them were asked. That is a genuine difference and it should change how the decision is made.
The practical test is readability rather than taste. Members will read thousands of messages on that background over a year, on small screens, in sunlight, in the dark. A picture that looks striking behind three demonstration bubbles can make a fast-moving conversation slightly harder to follow every single day.
So: quiet, low-contrast, and checked in both the light and dark themes before anybody else sees it. If it fails either, the group is better off without it, whatever the level allows.
