How Telegram Premium Profile Badges Work: Verified Subscriber Stars, Custom Emoji Statuses & Identity Architecture
A Premium subscriber has a small mark beside their name, visible in chats, groups and member lists. It is a subscription badge, and that is all it is.
Worth saying plainly, because it sits in roughly the same place as the verification mark and the two get confused — including by people being defrauded.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Tell a subscription badge from a verification mark.
- check_circle Say what each one actually proves.
- check_circle Check an account properly rather than by its badge.
- check_circle Decide what your own badge says about you.
The mark sits beside the name, in the same region of the screen as every other status indicator.
workspace_premium Two different marks
The subscription badge means somebody is paying for Premium. It says nothing about who they are, what they do, or whether they are honest. Anybody can have one in about a minute, including anybody impersonating you.
The verification mark is different: it is granted by Telegram to accounts and channels that have been checked as the genuine public presence they claim to be. It cannot be bought and it is the only badge that says anything about identity.
They look similar at a glance and appear in the same place, which is precisely why the distinction is worth learning. An account claiming to be a company, wearing a subscription badge, is not a verified company. It is a subscriber with a convincing name.

settings Reading a profile
- Tap the badge to see what it is The app names it for you.
- Read the username character by character Against the source you trust.
- Check how you arrived at the account A forwarded link is not a recommendation.
- Ignore the subscription badge entirely When judging whether to trust somebody.
- Never give a code or a password To any account, whatever it is wearing.
- Report impersonation When you see it; it is the only thing that removes it.
This page is what a mark beside a name signals. The curriculum step is everything else a profile says: usernames, what each privacy setting exposes, and building an identity people can recognise without relying on a badge.
