Who Holds the Keys to Your Telegram Group
Every group and channel has exactly one owner: the account that created it, unless ownership was handed on. Admins can do a great deal, but some things only the owner can do, and the owner is the one account no admin can remove. That makes the owner's account the most important single thing about your room, and it is usually the one nobody thinks about.
A room built by one person on one phone number depends on that person, that number and that account staying available. A room made alone can disappear alone. This step is about deciding, before the first member arrives, whose account holds the keys, who can step in if that account is lost, and what has to be true for a handover to work when you need it.

Most daily work happens in the first two rows and can be shared. The last three rows are why the owner account matters: whoever controls it can hand the room away, delete it, or take control of every admin.
The owner loses their phone and their number
Same group, same members, same bad luck. The difference is what was set up before.

lock Securing the owner account
The owner account is an ordinary Telegram account, so the protections are the ordinary ones, applied without exceptions.
- Turn on Two-Step Verification and add a recovery email. Settings > Privacy and Security > Two-Step Verification. It stops a stolen code or a reassigned phone number from being enough.
- Check its devices. The owner account should be signed in only on devices you control. End any session you do not recognise.
- Keep the account active. An account inactive for longer than its self-destruct period is deleted, and Beginner Basics Step 34 explains that timer. If the owner account is deleted, Telegram says the groups and channels it created are left without an owner, while admins keep their rights. Nobody can then transfer or delete the room.
- Use a number you will keep. A temporary or borrowed number is a poor foundation for a room you want to last.

A backup admin is someone you trust who can keep the room running if you cannot. Give them the rights they would need in an emergency: deleting messages, removing members, pinning messages. Whether they can also add other admins is a bigger decision, because that right lets them change who runs the room.
Pick someone reachable outside Telegram, so you can tell them what is happening if your own account is the problem. And protect their account the same way as yours. A backup admin with a weak account is a second door into your room, not a spare key.

Ownership can be transferred to an existing admin from the admin settings. Telegram runs a security check first: the current owner must have enabled Two-Step Verification more than 7 days ago and have been logged in on that device more than 24 hours. The new owner receives full owner rights, including the ability to remove your admin rights.
So a handover cannot be done in a hurry by someone who never set up Two-Step Verification. If you might ever need to pass the room on, whether because you are stepping back, selling a project or simply going offline for a long time, set it up now. When an owner leaves a group, Telegram asks them to appoint a new owner, who takes over after a week.

Telegram says groups and channels created by a deleted account are left without an owner, while admins keep their rights. With no admins at all, nobody is left to delete spam or remove accounts.

The right to add admins lets someone appoint others with the powers they hold, which is useful in a crisis and dangerous if their account is taken over. It does not make them owner; only a transfer does that.

Can a group have two owners?
No. There is always exactly one owner. What you can have is one or more admins with wide rights, which covers most of what a second owner would do day to day.
Should I create the room from a separate "admin" account?
Only if you will look after that account as carefully as your own: Two-Step Verification, a number you keep, and regular use so it is not deleted for inactivity. An account you forget about is a worse owner than your everyday one.
My old group has no owner any more. Can Telegram assign one?
Telegram says admins keep their rights when the owner's account is deleted, so remaining admins can still moderate. If what you need is a group you fully control, starting a new one and inviting members across is usually the practical route.
Does this apply to channels too?
Yes. Channels have one owner in the same way, the same transfer check, and the same risk if the owner account is lost. A channel with a discussion group has two rooms to think about, each with its own owner and admins.
