The short answer
- 1The official installer puts Telegram in your own user folder, so no administrator is needed.
- 2Keep the suggested folder and click Next; choosing Program Files ends in Access is denied.
- 3If company policy blocks it, ask IT rather than working around it, and set a local passcode.

Telegram Desktop installs without administrator rights
On a work or school computer where your Windows account is not an administrator, you can still install Telegram Desktop. The official installer puts the program in your own user folder, not in C:\Program Files, so Windows has no reason to ask for an administrator.
We tested this with a separate standard Windows account that is not in the Administrators group. The official installer finished without any administrator prompt, and its log recorded that setup ran without administrative privileges.
| Item | Result on an account without administrator rights |
|---|---|
| Administrator prompt | None appears. |
| Install folder | C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Telegram Desktop |
| Shortcuts | Only in your own Start menu and on your own desktop. |
| Other Windows accounts on the same PC | They do not see it. Anyone else who wants Telegram installs it in their own account. |
Install steps on a work PC
The steps are the same as on a home computer. The one thing to remember is to leave the install folder alone.
- Download the Windows installer from the official site, desktop.telegram.org.
- Run it. On the Select Destination Location screen, keep the folder it suggests and click Next.
- Accept the defaults on the remaining screens and click Finish; Telegram opens.
- The default folder is inside your own user folder - leave it as it is
- Next - no administrator prompt follows
Alex is a sample user name; your own Windows user name appears in its place.
Every screen is shown in how to install Telegram on Windows.
When company policy blocks the installer
Administrator rights are only half of it. Some organisations also allow only approved programs to run. On such a PC the installer may not start at all, or Telegram may install and then refuse to open.
- Do not try to get around the policy. It can break your employer's rules. Ask your IT team first whether Telegram is allowed.
- If it is allowed, ask IT to install it from the official installer. Checking that an installer is genuine shows how to confirm the file.
- For occasional use, Telegram Web runs in the browser with nothing to install. Use it only if your workplace allows that too.
Before you use Telegram on a work computer
A work computer may be shared, and it goes back when you leave or move desks. Two settings keep your private chats from staying behind.
- Turn on a local passcode. Telegram then asks for it every time it opens, so nobody can read your chats while you are away from the desk.
- Log out and end the session when you are done. Before you hand the computer back, log out on it and also end its session from your phone.

The IT team can usually read files in your user folder, which is one more reason to set the local passcode. More on passcodes and sessions is in the Security section.
Common mistakes on a work PC
| What you see | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Access is denied" during setup | The install folder was changed to Program Files | Run the installer again and keep the suggested folder. |
| Telegram is missing in another Windows account on the same PC | It was installed only in your user folder | Install it separately in that account. |
| The installer does not start at all | A company security policy may block it | Ask your IT team whether Telegram is allowed. |
FAQ
Is Telegram installed without admin rights the same app?
Yes. Only the install location differs; it is the same official program with the same features.
Can other people's Windows accounts on the PC see my Telegram?
No. The program and your login data are only in your own user folder. The computer's administrators can still open that folder, so turn on a local passcode.
Can I use the portable version to get around a blocked PC?
Getting around a company policy can break workplace rules. Ask your IT team first.
