How to Use Telegram Select Chats for Bots: Keyboard Criteria Filters, Admin Rights Gating & Channel Integration

play_circle Video tip • Bots

When a bot needs to be put into a group or channel, it does not add itself. Telegram shows you a picker of the chats where you have the right to do that, and you choose one.

That picker is a permission dialogue wearing a chat list, and the thing worth reading is the line above it saying what the bot will be able to do once it is in there.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Add a bot to the right chat deliberately.
  • check_circle Read what rights it is asking for before agreeing.
  • check_circle Understand why some chats are not offered.
  • check_circle Undo it cleanly.

The list is filtered to chats where you could actually add it, which is why it is shorter than your chat list.

smart_toy A short list is a permission check

The picker only shows chats where you have the right to add members or promote administrators. A group you are merely in does not appear, and neither does a channel somebody else runs. That filtering is doing a security job: you cannot put a bot somewhere you were not trusted to.

Above the list, the bot declares what it is asking for — simply to be a member, or to be an administrator with specific rights. Those two are very different, and the second is the one to read properly.

A bot that only needs to be a member sees what is addressed to it and nothing else. An administrator bot sees the whole conversation. Agreeing to the second because the dialogue looked like the first is the mistake this screen exists to prevent.

Do not grant what it did not ask for Where the rights are editable, turn off anything not obviously required. A bot asking to add administrators, or to change group information, should be questioned rather than accommodated.

Four moments in the same dialogue

All four are decisions, and the screen makes them look like taps.

forum Choosing deliberately

check_circle Read the chat name on the confirmation. The picker is fast and the wrong group is one tap away.
check_circle Test a new bot in a group you made for the purpose before putting it in a real community.
cancel Never add an unfamiliar bot to your largest group first. That is the one where a mistake is most expensive.

The list is short because you are only offered what you are trusted with. Read the rights line, not just the names.

settings Adding one properly

  1. Start the bot from a link you trust The project's own site.
  2. Read what it says it needs Above the chat picker.
  3. Try it in a test group first Especially if the bot is unfamiliar.
  4. Untick rights it does not obviously require Where the dialogue allows.
  5. Confirm the chat name Before the final tap.
  6. Review the admin list a few times a year And remove what is unused.
