Notification problems are nearly always the operating system rather than Telegram, and on Android they are usually battery management. Work through the checks for your platform in order.
Android
- Open Telegram Settings, Notifications and Sounds. Confirm notifications are on and Importance is High or greater.
- Check whether that specific contact or group is muted.
- Make sure Google Play Services is installed. Push delivery on Android depends on it.
- Check the notification priority for Telegram in Android's own settings. Depending on the device it is called Importance or Behaviour.
- If your phone runs battery saving software, whitelist Telegram in it.
Huawei and Xiaomi need one extra step
Both ship aggressive task killers that shut down Telegram's notification service. Add Telegram to the allowed list in the device's security settings:
| Device | Path |
|---|---|
| Huawei | Phone Manager app, Protected Apps, add Telegram |
| Xiaomi | Services, Security, Permissions, Autostart, enable Telegram |
This single setting resolves most reports of notifications arriving late or not at all on those brands.
iOS
- Check notifications are on in Telegram Settings, Notifications and Sounds.
- Check they are also on in phone Settings for Telegram.
- Check the contact or group is not muted.
- If they still do not arrive, reset the registration: shut Telegram down from the app switcher, set its alert style to None in phone settings, relaunch Telegram, then set the alert style back to Banners.
Telegram publishes a detailed troubleshooting guide for notification issues that goes further than this, including more manufacturer-specific power management settings.
