The fundamental difference is where your messages live. Telegram is cloud-based with seamless sync; WhatsApp is built around one phone that holds the history. Almost every other difference follows from that.
The practical consequences
| Telegram | |
|---|---|
| Devices at once | As many as you like, including tablets and computers, all fully independent |
| New phone | Sign in and the entire history is there, with no backup to restore |
| File size | Up to 2 GB per file, any type |
| Space used on the device | Can be under 100 MB, because media stays in the cloud |
| Freeing up space | Clear the cache; nothing is lost, since the originals remain |
Why "clear cache" is the feature people notice
On a phone-centric messenger, deleting media to reclaim space deletes it. On Telegram the local copy is a cache: remove it and the file is still in the cloud, ready to download again. Years of photographs and documents can sit in your history while the app occupies almost nothing.
On encryption
This is where a fair comparison needs care. WhatsApp applies end-to-end encryption to every chat by default. Telegram applies it to Secret Chats, while cloud chats are encrypted in transit and at rest with keys and data held separately across jurisdictions. Cloud chats are the price of the sync described above, and Secret Chats exist for when you want the other trade instead. Which model suits you depends on whether you value recoverability or leaving nothing behind, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
