Telegram needs a phone number to create an account. It does not need anybody else to know it, and with two settings changed you can be fully reachable while your number is invisible and unsearchable.
Most people change one of the two and assume they are done. The one they miss is the one that matters.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Hide your number from your profile, and stop it being a way to find you.
- check_circle Be contactable by a username instead, which you can change or discard.
- check_circle Understand what somebody who already has your number can still do.
- check_circle Know what Telegram itself still holds, because the settings do not change that.
The second setting only appears once the first is set to Nobody — which is why people who never set the first never see it.
visibility_off Two gates, not one
The first setting decides who can see your number on your profile. Setting it to Nobody removes it from view.
The second decides who can find you by your number — whether somebody who already has the digits can turn them into your account. This is the one that matters, because seeing a number on a profile was never how anyone found you. Uploading a list of numbers was.
Set the first to Nobody and the second appears, offering Everybody or My Contacts. My Contacts is the setting; with it, a stranger who has your number gets nothing back.
What this does and does not achieve
The settings are effective and bounded. Both halves matter if you are relying on them.
public Somebody who bought a list of numbers
group People who saved your number years ago
alternate_email How people reach you instead
lock The part the settings do not touch
The three settings, in one line: number to Nobody, finding by number to My Contacts, adding to groups to My Contacts.
settings Setting it up
- Open Privacy and Security Settings, then Privacy and Security.
- Phone Number, then Nobody The second option appears underneath once you do.
- Who can find me by my number, then My Contacts This is the important one.
- Groups and channels, then My Contacts Same screen, different row.
- Set a username On your profile. That becomes how people reach you.
- Add exceptions if you need them Always Allow can name a group, so a work team keeps the access without anyone else having it.
This page hides the number you have. The curriculum step covers not using one at all: virtual numbers bought for the purpose, how usernames are registered and traded, and what an account looks like when no personal number was ever involved.
