Emoji inside the folder name

Telegram Premium subscribers can put custom emoji into folder names. Open the emoji panel from the name field, place an emoji between the letters, and it shows on the folder tab above the chat list; an animated one keeps moving on the tab. With a pack of letter-shaped emoji you can even spell the whole name in decorative type.

Choosing the icon that sits next to a folder name, and picking symbols that stay distinct at a small size, is covered in custom emoji as folder icons. This page is only about putting emoji inside the name field. Creating folders in the first place is in setting up chat folders.

What to think about with emoji in folder names

RuleWhy
One emoji, one wordA single emoji before a short word such as "Work" or "Family" is the fastest to read and recognize. A row of emoji only widens the tab
Letter emoji only for short namesA name spelled in emoji letters looks good but takes up a lot of tab space. Use it on the one folder you tap most
Animation can be turned offSeveral moving tabs pull the eye away from the chat list. You can switch off the movement for a single folder with Disable Animations
Do not repeat the iconIf the folder icon and the emoji in the name are the same picture, the tab says it twice. Use one or the other
Keep a word in the nameCustom emoji are a subscription feature, and there is no official description of how they look after it ends. A word in the name keeps the folder recognizable either way

Adding custom emoji to a folder name

  1. Open the folder for editing: right-click its tab on a computer, or long-press it on Android and iOS, and choose Edit Folder. A new folder starts from Settings › Chat Folders › Create New Folder.
  2. Tap the emoji button at the right end of the Folder Name field.
  3. Swipe to the custom emoji packs and place one emoji before the word.
  4. Save and look at the tab row. If the movement distracts you, choose Disable Animations for that folder.
Telegram for Android, Settings › Chat Folders › Create New Folder: the Folder name field reads 'Clients' and the emoji panel below shows the Duck Emoji custom pack
  1. Folder name - the emoji button sits at the right end (it turns into a keyboard key while the panel is open)
  2. Pack tabs - swipe or tap to reach your custom emoji packs

The folder was not saved; the screen was only opened for the picture.
