Usually it is a secret chat
You log in to Telegram Desktop or Telegram Web, and most of your chats are there, but one or two from your phone are missing. That is almost never a sync error. The missing chats are usually secret chats.
Telegram's FAQ explains that secret chats are device-specific: they are not stored in Telegram's cloud and exist only on the device where they were started. Telegram Desktop and Telegram Web do not support secret chats at all, so they cannot show them. Only the native Telegram for macOS app supports secret chats on a computer, and even there only the ones started on that Mac.
| Chat type | On your phone | On Telegram Desktop or Web |
|---|---|---|
| Private chats, groups, channels | Yes | Yes, synced through the cloud |
| Secret chats started on the phone | Yes | No, and they cannot be moved there |
How to tell a secret chat
On your phone, a secret chat has a padlock next to the person's name in the chat list, and the chat itself says it is end-to-end encrypted. You can have an ordinary chat and a secret chat with the same person at the same time, so the person may appear on your computer while one of your conversations with them does not. The computer is showing the ordinary chat; the secret one stayed on the phone.
If it is not a secret chat
A normal chat that is missing on the computer usually has one of these causes:
| Cause | Where to look |
|---|---|
| The chat is archived | Open Archived Chats at the top of the chat list |
| A folder tab is selected | Switch to the All Chats tab above the list |
| A different account is open | Check the name at the top of the main menu; you may be logged in with another number |
| Older chats are still loading | Scroll down the list; a fresh login loads older chats as you go |
| The chat was deleted for both sides | It is gone everywhere, including on the phone |
If the whole list is empty rather than one chat missing, see logged in but the chat list is empty.
Continuing the conversation on the computer
There is no way to copy a secret chat's messages to another device. That is the point of the design. You have two choices:
- Keep that conversation on the phone. If it is sensitive enough to need a secret chat, the phone is where it belongs.
- Move the conversation to an ordinary chat with the same person if you need it on every device. Ordinary chats are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers, and sync everywhere you log in.
Using several devices with one account is covered in one account on two phones. Next step: Telegram keeps logging you out.
