An imported conversation does not sit in a separate archive. It is written into the chat itself, under its original dates, so scrolling up carries you out of Telegram's history and into the one you brought with you.

Old messages arrive under their own date dividers, so the chat reads as one continuous conversation.
history_edu One timeline, two origins
The import is silent. Nothing is announced, no notification fires for the hundreds of old messages, and the chat does not jump to the top of anybody's list because of it. You will usually only notice it happened by scrolling up and finding years you did not have before.
From then on the imported part is ordinary content. Search finds words in it, the media tabs in the chat profile include its photos and files, jumping to a date works across the join, and forwarding a message out of it works like any other forward. That is the real value of importing rather than keeping the export file: the history becomes searchable in the place you would think to search.
Each imported message carries a small label beside its timestamp. It is worth being clear about what that label claims: it says this message was written into Telegram from an outside file, not that the file was accurate. It is a provenance marker, not a certificate.

An import turns a file you would never open into history you will accidentally use. That is the whole return on it.
settings After it lands
- Scroll up and check the oldest date The quickest way to confirm the whole export arrived.
- Search for something you remember A name or a place from years ago proves the index covers it.
- Open the chat profile and look at the media tabs Imported files should be listed with everything else.
- Do not run the import again Even if it looked incomplete at first; give it time to finish uploading.
- Keep the export file until you have checked Then delete it from the phone; the copy in Telegram is the one you will use.
