The short answer
- 1Notifications that arrive in a burst when you open Telegram were held back by battery saving.
- 2Allow Telegram to run in the background in the phone's settings.
- 3On Xiaomi and Huawei, also allow Autostart or Protected Apps.

The sign: everything arrives when you open the app
If Telegram stays quiet for an hour and then delivers a burst of notifications the moment you open it, the messages were there all along. Android paused Telegram in the background to save battery, and only let it check in when you opened it. The fix is on the phone's side, not in Telegram.
1. Allow background usage
Open the phone's settings for the Telegram app (press and hold the Telegram icon, then App info), go to battery, and make sure Telegram may run in the background. On a Pixel-style phone the switch is Allow background usage, described as "Enable for real-time updates, disable to save battery."
- Allow background usage - keep it on for notifications in real time
This is Android's own settings screen on a Pixel-style phone. Samsung, Xiaomi and others word and arrange it differently.
Other makers use other names for the same idea: "Unrestricted", "Don't optimise", "No restrictions", or a list of apps allowed to run in the background. Whatever the name, choose the option that does not restrict Telegram.
2. Phones that close apps aggressively
Telegram's FAQ singles out two makers whose task killers interfere with its notifications, and gives the steps:
| Phone | What to do |
|---|---|
| Xiaomi | In the security app, Permissions, Autostart: find Telegram and enable autostart |
| Huawei | In Phone Manager, Protected Apps: add Telegram to the list |
Many other phones have a similar "sleeping apps" or "deep sleep" list in their battery settings. Make sure Telegram is not on it. Swiping Telegram away from the recent apps screen can also stop it on some phones; leave it running.
3. Telegram's own background options
In Telegram, under Notifications on the Settings tab, the Other section has Keep-Alive Service, which relaunches the app when the phone shuts it down, and Background Connection, which keeps a light connection open for notifications. Turn both on if notifications are late. See notifications not arriving for where they are.
4. Two settings that quietly stop notifications
- Manage app if unused. Android can "remove permissions, delete temporary files, stop notifications, and archive the app" for apps you have not opened for a while. If you rarely open Telegram on that phone, switch this off in App info.
- The phone's battery saver mode. When battery saver is on, Android limits background activity for most apps. Expect delays until it is off, or exclude Telegram if your phone allows it.
- Manage app if unused - can stop notifications for an app you rarely open

FAQ
Why are Telegram notifications delayed on Android?
Android's battery saving pauses Telegram in the background. Allow it to run in the background in App info.
How do I stop Android killing Telegram in the background?
Allow background usage, remove Telegram from any sleeping-apps list, and on Xiaomi enable Autostart.
Does Telegram's Power Saving setting delay notifications?
No. It reduces animations and autoplay on low battery; it does not hold back notifications.
