The short answer
- 1A red exclamation mark means the message never reached Telegram's servers.
- 2Check in order: your connection, the chat's rules, then your account.
- 3Tap the mark to resend, once.
What the red mark means
A red exclamation mark next to a message means it never reached Telegram's servers. The other person has not received it, and it will not arrive by itself later. The cause is almost always one of three things, and it is quickest to check them in this order: your connection, the chat's rules, then your account.
| What you notice | Cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Connecting..." or "Waiting for network..." at the top of the screen | No connection to Telegram | Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, turn off a VPN or old proxy; see stuck on Connecting |
| Only photos, links or stickers fail in a group, text works | Admins blocked that kind of message | Send text, or ask an admin |
| "Slow Mode is active. You can send your next message in …" | The group allows one message every so often | Wait for the timer in the message box, then send once |
| "The admins of this group have restricted you…" | You personally are restricted in that group | Ask an admin; see can't post in a group |
| "… doesn't accept voice messages." | The recipient's privacy setting | Send text instead |
| Only messages to people you don't know fail | A spam limit on your account | Check with @SpamBot; see mutual contacts only |
Send it again, once
Tap the red mark. Telegram offers to try sending the message again or to delete it. Once the connection is back, sending again is all it takes.
- Tap resend once and wait. If you tap it repeatedly while offline, several copies can go out together when the connection returns.
- Long or large messages, such as big videos, are more likely to fail on a weak connection. Wait for a stable network, or send a smaller version.
- A message that still fails after the connection is fine points to the chat's rules or your account, the lower rows of the table.
A red mark is not a block
People often read a failed message as "they blocked me". It is not: messages to someone who blocked you do not fail with a red mark. They usually stay with a single tick and are never marked as read. See how to tell if someone blocked you.
Next step: 'This channel can't be displayed'.

The message failed to send and the other person did not receive it. Tap the mark to send it again or delete it.

The admins may have blocked media in that group. Text still sends.
