The short answer
- 1In some countries, sign-up asks for a small fee before the SMS code is sent.
- 2It is real only inside the official app, paid through your phone's store.
- 3The payment buys a short Telegram Premium subscription.

What the screen says
In some countries, signing up for a new account in the Telegram mobile app shows a screen titled One-time SMS Fee before any code is sent. It explains itself in three short points:
| Point on the screen | What it says |
|---|---|
| High SMS Costs | "Telecom providers in your country charge Telegram very high prices for SMS." Some versions add that fake accounts are part of the reason. |
| Verification Required | "Telegram needs to send you an SMS with a verification code to confirm your phone number." |
| Support via Telegram Premium | Sign up for a short period of Telegram Premium, often one week, "to help cover the SMS costs." |
The button at the bottom reads Sign up for followed by a price in your local currency. Paying starts the short Premium subscription, and then the SMS code is sent.
Why Telegram asks for it
Telegram's developer documentation says the official apps may require a Telegram Premium purchase to continue a login or sign-up "due to the high cost of SMS verification codes for the user's country/provider." Every SMS costs Telegram money, and in places where carriers charge a lot, mass-produced fake accounts made that cost unmanageable. The fee moves that cost to the person signing up.
So it is not an error, and it is not your phone or your number doing something wrong. Trying again later or reinstalling will normally show the same screen.
How to tell it is genuine
The real screen only appears inside the official Telegram app, during sign-up, before the code screen. When you tap the button, your phone's own store sheet opens (App Store or Google Play), the same one you use for any in-app purchase.
What you get for the payment
- The SMS code, sent to the number you entered. From there sign-up continues as normal.
- Telegram Premium for the period shown, usually a week, with its bigger limits and extra features.
- A subscription in your store account. After signing up, open your store's subscriptions page and check whether it renews. Cancel there if you do not want to keep paying.
The fee is a one-time cost of getting in. Once you have an account, later logins on new devices usually come as a message inside Telegram on a device where you are already logged in, not by SMS. Getting your code in the Telegram app on another device explains how that works, and why keeping one device logged in matters.
If you do not want to pay
Be wary of anything that claims to skip the fee. The honest options are short:
- You already have an account on that number? Then you are logging in, not signing up. Look for the code in Telegram on your other device instead of asking for an SMS.
- You are setting up a brand-new account: the fee is how sign-up works for numbers in your country. It is the same for every new user there.
- Anonymous numbers sold on Fragment sign in without SMS at all, but they cost far more than a week of Premium and are not a shortcut.
Not the same thing: Premium for SMS
A different screen sometimes appears for people who already have an account, inviting them to join a programme called Premium for SMS. That is the reverse deal: your phone sends login codes to other people, and you receive Telegram Premium gift links in return. It is optional, it asks for permission to send SMS, and the app reminds you to "refer to your mobile plan for any SMS costs that you may incur." You can turn it off again with Deactivate Premium for SMS.
| One-time SMS Fee | Premium for SMS | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | A new user, during sign-up | An existing user, inside the app |
| Who pays | You pay a small fee | Your phone sends SMS for Telegram |
| Can you skip it | Not for a new account in that country | Yes, it is optional |
If the code still does not arrive after paying, work through a code that is not arriving. Next step: getting your login code in the Telegram app on another device.
FAQ
Why does Telegram ask me to pay to sign up?
In some countries carriers charge Telegram a lot for SMS. The official app may require a short Telegram Premium purchase before it sends the sign-up code.
Is the Telegram one-time SMS fee a scam?
Not when it appears inside the official app during sign-up and opens your App Store or Google Play payment sheet. Payment requests anywhere else are scams.
Can I sign up without paying the SMS fee?
Not for a new account on a number in a country where the fee applies. If the number already has an account, look for the code in Telegram on your other device.
