Telegram publishes its Android app twice: through the Play Store, and as a file you download from telegram.org and install yourself. They are the same app from the same developer, built from the same open source.
The differences are real but narrow, and so is the risk. Both are worth stating plainly, because this is the one topic in Telegram where following bad advice can cost you your account.

android What actually differs
The direct build updates itself. It tells you a new version exists and installs it, which means fixes reach you as soon as Telegram ships them rather than after a store review. For anybody who cares about getting security fixes early, that is the strongest argument.
The store build is also subject to the store's content rules, so some material that Telegram itself allows may be restricted inside it. That is a platform policy rather than anything Telegram chose, and it is the reason the direct download exists at all.
Against that, the store build installs with one tap, updates without your attention, and never requires you to allow installations from outside it. For most people on most phones that is the safer arrangement, and choosing it is not a compromise.

- Allow installation from the browser when prompted Only for that browser, only now.
- Install, then turn that permission back off This is the step everybody skips and it is the one that matters.
- Let the app update itself from then on It will offer new versions directly.
