The short answer

  1. 1Telegram's chats live in the cloud, so deleting the app leaves your account intact.
  2. 2People can still find and message you after you remove the app.
  3. 3To leave for good, delete the account or let the inactivity timer do it.

Your account is not on your phone

Telegram keeps your chats in its cloud, not on your phone. So deleting the app only removes the app and its local copy. Your account stays exactly as it was: people can still find you, message you and add you to groups, and everything is waiting when you log in again.

Pick the one that matches what you want

  • A break from messages: mute notifications, or log out. Your account waits for you. See what logging out removes.
  • More space on the phone: do not delete the app; clear Telegram's cache instead. Media stays in the cloud. See clearing the cache.
  • Leave Telegram for good: delete the account. See how to delete your account.
  • Not sure yet: set a short inactivity period under Delete my account in Privacy and Security. If you never come back, the account deletes itself.

The inactivity clock

An account you stop using is not kept forever. "If you do not come online at least once within this period, your account will be deleted along with all messages and contacts." Telegram's FAQ gives 18 months as the default. Logging in on any device resets the clock. See what happens to an inactive account.

Next step: signing up again after deleting.
