The short answer
- 1Media that never finishes is usually phone storage or the connection.
- 2Then check auto-download size limits, storage permission and the app version.

Check these in order
A photo or video that never finishes, or a circle that keeps spinning, usually comes down to space, connection or settings. Going through them in this order finds the cause fastest:
| # | Check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Is the phone almost full? | Free up space. Telegram's own cache is often the biggest item; see below |
| 2 | Does the top of the screen say "Connecting..."? | Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, turn off an old proxy or VPN; see stuck on Connecting |
| 3 | Is the file larger than your auto-download limit? | Tap it to download; larger files wait for you |
| 4 | Does Android ask for storage access? | Allow photos and videos (files and media) for Telegram in the phone's settings |
| 5 | Does it say the media is not supported in your version? | Update the app; see the app won't update |
Clear the cache safely
The cache is the copy of media already downloaded to your phone. Clearing it is safe: as Telegram's storage screen puts it, "All media will stay in the Telegram cloud and can be re-downloaded if you need them again." It frees space, and it also clears a half-downloaded copy that may be stuck.

- Your media stays in the Telegram cloud and downloads again when needed
Your chats are not touched. Media you open again downloads afresh. To stop the cache filling up again, see freeing up storage without losing chats.
Big files wait for a tap
Telegram downloads small media on its own and leaves larger files for you to start. The limits are under Automatic media download in Data and Storage, separately for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming. A video bigger than the limit shows a download arrow instead of playing; tap it. This is a setting, not a fault.
- Storage Usage - how much space Telegram uses, and Clear Cache
- Automatic media download - files above these sizes wait for a tap
Media you cannot download anywhere
- Deleted by the sender or removed by an auto-delete timer: it is gone for everyone.
- From a secret chat, on a different device: secret chats exist only on the device where they were started.
- In a protected channel: you can view it, but saving it is blocked; see can't save or forward.
If downloads work but are slow, see slow downloads and videos that keep pausing.
FAQ
Why won't Telegram download photos or videos?
Usually the phone is low on storage or the connection is unstable. Large files also wait for a tap.
Is it safe to clear Telegram's cache?
Yes. Telegram says all media stays in the cloud and can be downloaded again; chats are not affected.
Why does a Telegram video show a download arrow instead of playing?
It is larger than your automatic download limit. Tap it to download.
