The short answer
- 1Store installs update through the store; the telegram.org Android version updates inside the app.
- 2Stuck store updates: let the queue finish, free space, restart.
- 3'Not supported by your version' messages appear correctly after updating.

Where your copy of Telegram updates from
How Telegram updates depends on where you installed it:
| You installed from | Updates come from |
|---|---|
| Google Play or the App Store | The store, like any other app |
| telegram.org (the Android download) | Telegram itself: an Update Telegram bar or prompt inside the app |
The version downloaded from the website does not appear in Google Play's update list. It shows its own bar at the bottom of the chat list with the download size, or a prompt with Update Now, Download Now and Remind me later.

- Update Telegram - in the version downloaded from telegram.org, updates come through this bar, not an app store
The store update will not finish
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| Stuck on "Pending" or "Waiting for download" | Let other app updates finish or pause them, and connect to Wi-Fi; stores queue updates one by one |
| Fails while installing | Free up storage space, restart the phone and try again |
| No Update button at all | You already have the latest version, or the phone's system is too old for the newest one |
Telegram's apps page lists which system versions the apps support. If your phone's system is older than that, the store will not offer new versions. Update the phone's system if you can.
Messages that tell you to update
- "This message is not supported by your version of Telegram. Update the app to view" means someone used a feature newer than your app. After updating, the message appears normally.
- "Sorry, your Telegram app is out of date and can't handle this request. Please update Telegram." appears when you try to use something your version cannot do.
Neither is an error with your account. Both go away once the app is up to date.
If the downloaded update will not install on Android, see 'App not installed' errors. For Telegram Desktop updates, see Telegram Desktop won't start. Next step: Android 'App not installed'.
