What "App not installed" means
When Android refuses an APK with "App not installed", it rarely says why. With Telegram's own Android download from telegram.org, the cause is almost always one of these:
| Cause | Sign | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The download was incomplete | The file is much smaller than the size on the download page | Delete it and download again on a stable connection |
| Not enough storage | The phone is nearly full | Free up space; installing needs room for the app and its data |
| Installing an older version over a newer one | You already have a newer Telegram of the same kind | Use the newest version from telegram.org |
| The browser or file app is not allowed to install apps | Android asked for permission and you declined | Allow it for that one install, then switch it off again |
| Play Protect or security software blocked it | A warning appeared before the error | Only continue for the genuine file from telegram.org |
Do you need the APK at all?
For most people, Telegram from Google Play is simpler: it installs and updates itself. The APK from telegram.org is for phones without Google Play or for people who prefer it. It installs as a separate app from the Play version, so the two can sit side by side, and it updates itself from inside the app rather than through the store; see the app won't update.
Allowing the install, safely
Android blocks installs from anything other than the app store unless you allow the app that opens the file, such as your browser or file manager, to "install unknown apps". If you allow it:
- Download the APK only from telegram.org.
- Allow installs for the browser or file app when Android asks.
- Install, then switch that permission off again in the phone's settings.
If the install starts from inside Telegram and Android says "APK installation is restricted for this app", the same permission is needed for Telegram itself.
Your chats after reinstalling
Installing a different build or reinstalling does not affect your cloud chats; log in and they return. Secret chats on that phone are lost if you uninstall first, because they exist only on the device. See what logging out removes.
Next step: Telegram not showing in the App Store.
FAQ
Why does Android say 'App not installed' for Telegram?
The APK may be incomplete, the phone low on space, or the file older than the version you have. Download the latest from telegram.org again.
Can I install the Telegram APK alongside the Google Play version?
Yes. The telegram.org build installs as a separate app from the Play version.
Is it safe to install a Telegram APK from a chat?
No. Only the app store and telegram.org are official. Modified builds are a common way to steal accounts.
