No notifications on the computer

Telegram Desktop shows its own pop-ups or uses the system's notifications. When nothing appears, check Telegram first, then the operating system:

  1. Main menu (☰)
  2. Settings
  3. Notifications and Sounds
  4. Desktop notifications
  1. Settings tab
  2. Notifications
  1. Bottom Settings tab
  2. Notifications and Sounds

On Windows, Telegram can use Windows notifications or its own pop-ups. If one style never appears, switching the Use Windows notifications option is a quick test. The Location on the screen setting decides where Telegram's own pop-ups appear.

The computer and the phone ring together

Telegram keeps two kinds of notification settings. Muting a chat is saved to your account, so a chat you mute on the phone is muted on the computer too. The device switches, such as Desktop notifications, sounds and pop-ups, belong to each device. So if both the phone and the computer have alerts on, both will alert you for the same message. Decide which device should speak up when:

  • At a desk all day: keep desktop notifications, and mute the phone's Telegram notifications during work hours, or lower them to silent banners.
  • Computer only for occasional use: switch off Desktop notifications on the computer, and let the phone handle alerts.

If a muted chat still pops up somewhere, check that device for an exception that overrides the mute, or a mention: mentions and replies can notify you even in muted chats.

Unread numbers that do not match

The number on the taskbar or Dock icon follows the desktop's badge settings: Include muted chats in unread count and Count unread messages. If the phone counts differently, its own badge settings differ. Align them on both devices, or ignore the difference. See iPhone badges and previews.

For notifications missing on phones, see notifications not arriving. Next step: notifications vibrate but make no sound.
