The short answer

  1. 1Silent notifications come from one of three layers.
  2. 2Telegram's sound per chat type, that chat's own settings, or the phone.
  3. 3On Android, Priority below High can also mean no sound.

Sound has three layers

A Telegram notification can vibrate but stay silent when any one of three layers is set to silence: Telegram's sound for that type of chat, a setting on that chat, or the phone itself. Work through them in that order.

1. Telegram's sound for each chat type

  1. Main menu (☰)
  2. Settings
  3. Notifications and Sounds
  1. Settings tab
  2. Notifications
  3. Private Chats
  4. Sound
  1. Bottom Settings tab
  2. Notifications and Sounds
  3. Sound

Private chats, groups and channels each have their own sound. Tap the row for the chat type, not its switch, to open it. Check that Sound is not set to "No sound". On Android, tap More Options to see the rest: Vibrate is set separately from sound, and Priority should be High or Urgent; lower priorities can arrive without sound or banner.

Telegram for Android, Notifications for private chats with more options open - Show Message Previews, Sound Default, Light Color, Vibrate Default, Popup Notification No popup, Priority Urgent
  1. Sound - Default plays the phone's notification sound; None is silent
  2. Vibrate - separate from sound
  3. Priority - Urgent or High for sound and a banner

2. That one chat

A chat can override the defaults. Open the chat's notification settings from its profile and check:

  • It is not muted, or muted until a time that has not passed yet.
  • Its own sound is not set to silent. A custom sound replaces the default for that chat only.
  • It is not in a list of exceptions in the main notification settings with sound turned off.

Messages sent as silent, with "Send without sound", also arrive without sound on purpose. That is the sender's choice.

3. The phone

DeviceCheck
AndroidMedia and notification volume up; Do Not Disturb off; in the phone's settings for Telegram, the notification categories set to alert with sound, not silent
iPhoneThe ring/silent switch or Action button not set to silent; Focus off; in Settings, Telegram, Notifications, Sounds on
ComputerThe system volume and Telegram's own sound switch in Notifications and Sounds; system Focus or Do Not Disturb off

Sounds inside the app

While Telegram is open, notifications for other chats follow the in-app settings on Android: In-App Sounds and In-Chat Sounds under Notifications. If those are off, you will feel a vibration or see a banner but hear nothing while you are using the app.

If nothing arrives at all, see notifications not arriving. If only one chat is silent, see only one chat doesn't notify you.
