If only one chat is silent, look at that chat
When every chat notifies you except one, the cause is almost never the phone. It is a setting on that chat, or on the group of chats it belongs to. Check these in order:
| Check | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The chat is muted | A crossed-out speaker next to its name in the chat list | Open the chat's menu or profile and choose Unmute |
| Muted for a while | "Notifications muted for …" was shown when it was set | Unmute now, or wait for the time to pass |
| A custom silent sound | The chat's notification settings show a sound other than the default | Set its sound back to default |
| Listed as an exception | It appears under Exceptions in Notifications for that chat type | Remove it from the list, or change its rule |
| In a folder or archive | The chat is in Archived Chats | Archiving does not mute, but archived chats are often muted; check the speaker icon |
Muting is saved to your account, so a chat muted on one device is muted on all of them. If you muted it on your laptop months ago, your phone stays quiet too.
Exceptions override the main switches
Every chat type (private chats, groups, channels) has a list of Exceptions: chats that follow their own rule instead of the main setting. When you change the main setting, Telegram reminds you: "Please note that … are listed as exceptions and won't be affected by this change." A chat added as an exception with notifications off stays silent however you set the main switch.

How to set exceptions on purpose, for example to hear only from one important group, is covered in notification exceptions.
Groups with topics
In a group with topics, each topic can be muted on its own. If one topic is silent while the rest of the group notifies you, open that topic and unmute it. Telegram also shows how many topics are listed as exceptions in the group's notification settings.
Mentions in muted chats
You do not have to unmute a busy group to hear when someone needs you. Replies to your messages and mentions of your name can still notify you in a muted group. If that is not happening, check the group's notification settings for mentions and replies.
If several chats are silent, start from notifications not arriving. Next step: notifications that show only 'New message'.
