Content protection is not only a channel setting. It can be switched on for a single one-to-one conversation, which stops what is said there from being forwarded on, copied out, or saved in the ordinary ways.
What it does technically is narrow. What it does socially is larger, and that is the part most people do not think about before switching it on.

Everything this does happens within Telegram. Forwarding is refused, the copy option goes away, media does not save to the gallery, and on some platforms the screen itself resists being captured. Inside the app the wall is real.
Outside it there is no wall, and there cannot be. A second phone photographing the screen defeats every part of this, and it always will, because the picture has to reach a pair of eyes and eyes can be sat next to a camera. Anything built to stop copying stops the convenient copy and not the determined one.
Which gives the honest way to describe it: this raises the effort required from nothing to something. For the ordinary case — a message passed on thoughtlessly, a screenshot taken because it was one tap — that is a genuine and useful difference. For somebody who has decided to keep what you sent, it is not a difference at all.
You switch it on. What does the other person experience?
It applies to the conversation, so the forward and copy options disappear on both sides and neither of you can pass anything on. That symmetry is worth knowing before you enable it: you are also restricting yourself, and you are making a visible change to a shared space that the other person did not ask for.
Does it stop screenshots?
Some systems let an app refuse to be captured and some do not, so the behaviour differs depending on what the other person is using — and you have no way of knowing which. More importantly, no version of this reaches a phone held up to the screen. Treat capture as possible in every case and the differences stop mattering.
Does turning it on protect what you already sent?
The restriction is a property of the chat, so the conversation as it stands comes under it. What it cannot touch is anything that has already left: a forward sent last week, a file saved to a gallery, a screenshot in somebody's camera roll. Switching it on after something has gone wrong is closing a door the item is already through.
What is the main effect of switching it on in a personal conversation?
This is the part people underestimate. The other person sees the restriction, knows you set it, and reads it as a statement about trust — sometimes as sensible caution and sometimes as an accusation. Between colleagues handling something confidential it lands well. Between friends it can land as a suspicion that was never said out loud, which is a real cost for a feature that a determined person could defeat with a second phone.

The clear case is work. A document shared with a contractor, a draft that should not circulate, material belonging to somebody else who trusted you with it — in all of those the restriction states a policy, both sides understand it, and the awkwardness is nil because nobody takes it personally.
It also has a quiet use in the other direction: switching it on in a chat where you are the one being sent things, as a way of saying that what arrives here will not go further. That is a courtesy rather than a precaution, and it is noticed.
The case it does not fit is the one it looks designed for — sending something personal and hoping it cannot escape. That situation is not improved by a setting, and the choices that do improve it are about what you send and to whom.
